AI for students in Pakistan: notes, presentations and prep with RafayGen
There is a version of using AI as a student that raises your marks and a version that lowers them, and they look almost identical from the outside. Both involve asking an AI about your coursework. The difference is entirely in what you do with the answer.
This is a practical guide to the first version: specific study techniques that work, the ones that quietly damage your learning, and how to handle the academic-integrity question honestly rather than by pretending it does not exist.
The thing that actually determines whether it helps
There is a well-documented effect in learning research called the fluency illusion: reading a clear explanation makes you feel that you understand, and that feeling is a poor predictor of whether you can reproduce the idea later. AI explanations are extremely fluent. That makes them unusually good at producing the feeling of understanding and unusually good at hiding its absence.
The fix is not to avoid the explanation. It is to always follow it with retrieval — closing the answer and reconstructing it yourself. Every technique below is built around that, because a study method that skips retrieval is a study method that feels productive and is not.
Techniques that work
- Explain-back. Read the AI's explanation, close it, write your own version from memory, then paste yours back and ask what you got wrong or left out. The correction is where the learning happens, and it is specific to your actual gaps.
- Generate questions, not answers. Ask for fifteen exam-style questions on a chapter without answers. Attempt them cold. Only then ask for the solutions. This inverts the usual failure mode.
- Ask for the marking scheme. "What would a full-marks answer to this question contain?" gives you the structure examiners reward, which is often a different thing from a correct answer.
- Interrogate a worked solution instead of copying it. "Why is step three necessary?", "what happens if I skip it?", "what is the most common mistake here?" — this is the conversation you would have with a tutor and it is where the tool genuinely outperforms a textbook.
- Use it as a patient re-explainer. Ask for the same concept three ways: as a formal definition, as an analogy, and as a worked example. Different framings catch different misunderstandings, and asking a human to explain something a fourth time has a social cost that asking a model does not.
- Practise viva and interview answers out loud with a voice mode. Speaking an answer exposes gaps that reading it never will, and rehearsing against something that responds beats rehearsing against a mirror.
- Turn a chapter into a structured summary — and then check the summary against the chapter yourself. The checking is not optional; it is the step that catches what the model dropped.
Techniques that feel productive and are not
Asking for a summary and reading it instead of the source. You end up with the model's compression of the material, which is fluent, lossy in ways you cannot see, and not what your exam is set on.
Getting a full solution before attempting the problem. The struggle before the answer is not wasted time, it is the mechanism. A solution read before an attempt is entertainment.
Generating flashcards in bulk and never testing yourself on them. The generation is the easy half.
Treating output as a source. Assignments require citations to real work. AI-generated reference lists routinely contain papers that do not exist, with plausible authors, plausible journals and plausible years. Every citation must be found and read independently — and if you cannot find it, that is because it is not real.
The integrity question, answered directly
Submitting AI-generated work as your own is academic misconduct at essentially every institution, and the rules that matter are your institution's, not any advice on a website. Read your own department's policy before you rely on a general principle.
The general principle that holds up: AI can help you understand, plan, check and revise. It should not produce the words you submit as your own analysis. Using it to explain a concept before you write is like asking a friend to explain it; using it to write the paragraph you hand in is not.
Two practical notes. Detection tools exist, they are unreliable in both directions, and being wrongly accused is a real risk — keeping your drafts, notes and version history is genuine protection. And the deeper problem is not getting caught: a degree you did not earn the understanding for stops being useful the first time someone asks you to do the work.
Notes for studying in Urdu and Roman Urdu
Ask in the language you think in, then ask for output in the language you will be examined in. If your paper is in English, having the concept explained in Roman Urdu and then producing your own English summary is a genuinely effective sequence — you understand in your first language and practise in your second.
Be careful with technical vocabulary. Translated technical terms are frequently non-standard, and writing a translated term in an English exam paper costs marks. Ask explicitly for the standard English term alongside the explanation.
If your study material is a scanned Urdu book, optical character recognition makes it searchable, which changes how you can revise from it — but proofread the recognised text before you rely on it, because Urdu OCR is imperfect and a wrongly recognised word in a definition is worse than no text at all.
